John Legend Embraces New Musical Directions with Pharrell and Reflects on Creative Challenges

John Legend, praised by Jay-Z as “our voice,” explores a different approach to his music with the album “Muse,” which encourages him to prioritize spoken delivery over traditional singing. This marks a significant shift for Legend, known for his emotional ballads like “All of Me” and “Ordinary People.” The 16-track album, set to release on Friday, is the result of a long-standing friendship with Pharrell Williams, showcasing their collaborative efforts recorded at Williams’ studio in Paris.

In a conversation with The Associated Press, Legend expressed his desire to consistently challenge himself in his music. He highlighted Pharrell’s influence in encouraging a more conversational style on tracks and reflected on the creative risks he embraces, steering clear of complacency in his extensive career. Legend also discussed his work on “Imitation of Life,” focusing on themes of race and identity, and emphasized the importance of pushing the boundaries of storytelling in contemporary music.
