Serbians forced to wait hours to vote at NYC consulate as Balkan nation holds election

On Sunday, Serbian immigrants in New York City and surrounding areas lined up along a Midtown block to participate in an important parliamentary election for Serbia. The voting took place under tight hours from 2 a.m. to 3 p.m., reflecting local voting times in Serbia, leading to long waits for many. Dozens endured lines stretching down West 45th Street, with wait times reported to be around two hours.

The Serbian government announced a snap election last month following the resignation of former President Aleksandar Vučić, who aims to reclaim his position as prime minister, facing opposition from the anti-corruption Student List party. Voters criticized the limited voting hours set by their government, expressing frustration at the organization. Some individuals noted a strong turnout, indicating a significant engagement from overseas voters.
