Mayor Zohran Mamdani, alongside more than 100 elected officials from New York state, has called for private parking lot owners in New York City to prohibit U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from utilizing their properties. This appeal comes in the wake of a shooting incident involving ICE officers and a Dominican immigrant, Oscar Belgal, in Marble Hill.
In a letter released on Friday, they implored lot and garage owners to inform ICE that their properties will not be available for immigration enforcement. The letter emphasized that allowing ICE to operate from these spaces terrifies local communities and poses risks to property and safety. Notably, previous protests have occurred near locations allegedly used by ICE for operations, prompting concern and calls for action from local advocates.
