Letters with ‘suspicious' substance sent to congressional and election offices nationwide

Federal authorities are currently investigating letters containing a “suspicious” substance that have been sent to congressional and election offices throughout the United States. Recipients are being advised to treat these mailings as potentially hazardous.

The investigation, led by the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and U.S. Capitol Police, was highlighted in a communication from the Senate Sergeant at Arms obtained by NBC News. The message indicated that while efforts are being made to intercept additional letters, some may still arrive at their intended destinations.

An FBI statement confirmed the investigation into a series of suspicious mailings, which included Secretary of State offices and their election counterparts. Several Democratic senators, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, Alex Padilla, and Chris Murphy, were specifically targeted. A suspicious envelope sent to Murphy’s Hartford office reportedly posed no immediate danger to him or his staff.

Officials from various states reported similar incidents, with letters being intercepted before they could reach their destinations. Just weeks prior to Election Day, the National Association of Secretaries of State and other authorities condemned the threats against election officials, emphasizing that those handling elections should never fear for their safety while performing their essential duties.
