NYC expands free 2-K program with 10,000 more seats for fall 2027

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — New York City is set to broaden its free childcare initiative for 2-year-olds, reaching new neighborhoods, including the entire Bronx and Staten Island. Mayor Mamdani, alongside Governor Hochul and other officials, announced this significant expansion on Monday.

Starting in the fall of 2027, the city will introduce 10,000 additional 2-K seats across 17 more school districts. This is in addition to the 2,000 children already enrolled in the program from five districts this fall. The necessity for this program is evident, according to officials, with City Council Speaker Julie Menin highlighting that around 375,000 parents, predominantly mothers, have left the workforce due to lack of affordable childcare options. Mamdani noted that the free 2-K program will provide considerable savings for parents, estimated at about $25,000 a year. Following this expansion, the program will operate in 22 out of the city’s 32 school districts.
