New Jersey food importer files lawsuit challenging Trump's 50% tariffs on Canadian goods

A food importer from New Jersey, known as the Gellert Global Group, has filed a lawsuit that contests President Donald Trump’s authority to impose a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of goods imported from Canada. The court case has been brought before the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York.

The tariffs were enacted after Trump referenced Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which has not previously been applied in trade disputes. This measure has led to significant retaliatory actions from Canada and heightened diplomatic tensions. Sara Albrecht, chair of the Liberty Justice Center which is representing Gellert, has criticized the president’s use of the statute without appropriate limits set by Congress. The lawsuit follows a broader context of Trump’s tariffs policy, which included a ban on nearly $1 billion in Canadian products last month.
