In New York City, the Delivery Protection Act, which mandates that Amazon hire ‘last-mile’ delivery workers directly, is sparking considerable debate. The National Urban League has come out against the bill, warning of potential negative consequences for independent businesses that partner with Amazon. Marc Morial, the organization’s president, stated that the act could lead to job losses, particularly affecting Black and brown communities.
Morial emphasized the importance of considering the broader business ecosystem rather than solely focusing on Amazon. The legislation has significant backing from Mayor Zohran Mamdani, City Council Member Tiffany Cabán, and numerous labor organizations. Supporters argue it aims to improve worker protections and safety, though critics contend it could harm small businesses and job opportunities in the city.
