A newly identified synthetic opioid known as cychlorphine, which is claimed to be significantly more potent than fentanyl, is linked to numerous recent overdose deaths in the United States. Authorities in Tennessee noted more than 30 fatal incidents connected to cychlorphine since October 2025. A report from the White House’s Office of National Drug Control Policy in April 2026 indicated at least 41 deaths in Tennessee alone between July 2025 and February 2026, while the national total reached a minimum of 55 fatalities.
Reports of fatal overdoses associated with cychlorphine have also been documented in Illinois, California, and Oklahoma. The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health has cautioned that even a small amount of this drug can lead to severe respiratory issues. According to Nicholas Kardaras, a clinical expert, cychlorphine is akin to ‘the new fentanyl on steroids,’ possessing up to ten times the potency of fentanyl and potentially 500 times that of morphine. The substance is unregulated and not approved for any medical use, often appearing in counterfeit pills and other illicit drugs, making it a significant risk for users.
