Commanders' Dan Quinn appears to lose track of downs one week after clock debacle – but he has an explanation

Dan Quinn, head coach of the Washington Commanders, is currently facing a public relations challenge, with influential figures portraying him as an incompetent NFL sideline manager. This perception intensified during the second quarter of the recent Monday Night Football game against the San Francisco 49ers, when Quinn appeared to misjudge the down situation. He mistakenly signaled for a field goal, believing it was fourth down, after his team had failed to convert on the previous play, which ended in a penalty.

Quinn later provided a different narrative during his postgame remarks, asserting that he was aware of the down situation. He stated, “No, I definitely knew it was fourth down. We were going for it… I think it was the illegal shift, there’s not a penalty to go for a field goal.” The coach’s postgame explanation went largely unnoticed due to its timing, overshadowed by the on-field confusion that many viewers witnessed.
