Lynchburg Woman Running NYC Marathon to Raise Awareness for Brain Injury Survivors

Julie Abbott, a local from Lynchburg, is preparing to take part in the New York City Marathon, which holds significance beyond the 26.2 miles for her. Having experienced a traumatic brain injury at the age of 19 due to a car accident, Abbott aims to leverage this marathon as a platform to enhance awareness and provide support for others who live with similar challenges. Her journey began when doctors discovered bleeding in her brain after the accident, marking the start of a profound transformation in her life.

Abbott faces ongoing effects from her injury, learning to distinguish between her current limitations and the expectations she set for herself before the incident. Running, which she insists wasn’t a part of her life prior to her injury, has now become a source of community, goal-setting, and a way to address the mental health hurdles that accompany recovery. Through her run, Abbott intends to shed light on the isolation many survivors feel and reassure them that they are not alone in their struggles. She hopes to inspire others in recovery by showcasing that support and hope are attainable, even amid overwhelming challenges. Contributions to her fundraising efforts can be made until November 1, with all funds directed to the Brain Injury Association of New York State.
