Instagram, comic books and public engagement: One watchdog’s plan to protect inspector general independence

Lucy Lang, the inspector general of New York, believes that increasing public awareness of inspectors general (IGs) is vital for strengthening governance. In a recent interview, she emphasized the importance of making the public knowledgeable about the oversight roles that IGs play within government, especially following a period when many inspectors general have faced termination or replacement under political administrations.

Lang, who took office in 2021 and previously practiced as a Manhattan prosecutor, has launched initiatives aimed at better communication with younger audiences. This includes a civic education campaign that involves creating a comic book and engaging students across various levels of education. By utilizing social media and a youth advisory council, Lang aims to ensure that future generations are aware of the significance of oversight and the role of IGs in maintaining governmental integrity.
