Google Invests in Virtual Power Plants to Ease Demand for Data Center Power

To Make Way For Data Centers, Google Will Pay Others to Use Less Power

Google is investing in one of the largest virtual power plant initiatives in the U.S., incentivizing homes and businesses to lower their electricity use during peak demand. This strategy aims to free up grid capacity for data centers. Through an extended agreement with Voltus, the initiative could generate up to 1,070 megawatts in the Mid-Atlantic PJM grid, equivalent to the output of a sizable nuclear facility.

Rather than relying on new power generation facilities, Voltus will enroll homes and businesses, offering them incentives to reduce energy consumption during times of high demand or grid strain. Adjustments could happen automatically through technologies like smart thermostats and batteries. While these individual reductions may be minor, Voltus asserts that collective efforts can provide significant capacity when needed, potentially faster and more sustainably than building conventional power plants. Ellen Zuckerman, Google’s head of energy market development for North and South America, stated that virtual power plants represent a crucial short-term solution to meet energy needs and support clean energy goals.
