The FBI conducted a raid on the home of Abdul El-Sayed’s mother in the early 2000s, possibly tied to a terror financing investigation centered on the Islamic charity where she was employed, as per El-Sayed’s sister, Eman Abdelhadi. Abdelhadi, a professor at the University of Chicago, recounted the incident in a June 2016 article about her experience at a vigil following the Pulse nightclub shooting.
In her recollection, she highlighted the distress caused by the FBI’s presence at their home, stating, ‘I flashed back to memories of the FBI raiding mosques, homes—including my own—and Muslim charity organizations.’ This raid is linked to the Islamic American Relief Agency, which was shut down for funding terrorism, including groups like al-Qaeda. Although the exact timing of the raid on her mother’s home remains unclear, it is believed to be connected to the controversy surrounding the IARA’s closure.
