Could New York Host the Winter Olympics? Hochul Evaluates Potential for 2042
New York might soon be a contender for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics.

New York might soon be a contender for the Winter Olympics and Paralympics. A newly established Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games Committee, representing both Lake Placid and New York City, convened for the first time in New York City on Monday morning to evaluate the feasibility of hosting the Games.
The Committee’s goal is to determine if a contemporary approach, which includes splitting events between Lake Placid and New York City, complies with the International Olympic Committee’s hosting criteria. Supported by Governor Kathy Hochul, the Committee consists of nearly 90 members from various sectors, including state government, sports, business, and community organizations. Governor Hochul has asked the Committee to assess the advantages and obstacles of potentially staging the Winter Games in 2042.
In a press release, Hochul expressed, “New York is an Olympic State. We have the history, we have the venues, and we have a passion for sports that’s second to none.” The Committee, formed in June, is set to explore hosting options for one year, although Hochul clarified that their research does not imply a formal commitment to bidding for the Games. The Committee will present its findings and recommendations to the State at the conclusion of its assessment period.
