Opinion: The World Cup was a test for city government. How did we do?

This summer, over a million fans arrived in the New York/New Jersey area for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with visitors from around the globe enjoying everything the city offers. The tournament not only provided a feast of soccer but also posed serious questions regarding the effectiveness of our city’s government under Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who was just starting his first term.

Mamdani’s administration was tasked with ensuring the safety of visitors while making the high-profile event accessible and beneficial to local businesses. Through collaboration across multiple agencies and innovative planning, they managed to keep the city safe. Those efforts were complemented by the dedication of public servants and thousands of volunteers, which resulted in New York experiencing one of its safest summers in history.

The mayor also emphasized affordability, facilitating 1,000 discounted tickets for residents and organizing over 100 community watch parties, ensuring everyone could partake in the World Cup excitement. The economic impact was staggering, contributing $2 billion to the local economy and generating 12,000 jobs, with notable increases in foot traffic, especially in underserved communities.
