The much-anticipated return of Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater’s Spring Awakening to New York City is poised to present a distinctive interpretation compared to the original 2006 Tony Award-winning production. Music supervisor Or Matias shared exclusive insights about the Studio Seaview production under the direction of Tony Award winner Danya Taymor and choreography by Celia Rowlson-Hall, highlighting a strong, fresh vision for the revival.
Matias emphasized the intention behind the adaptation, describing it as a Shakespearean approach that seeks to uncover every nuance. Although he reassured fans that the revival will not be entirely reorchestrated, he noted that there will be musical adjustments that align with the artistic perspectives of Taymor and Rowlson-Hall, enhancing the show’s existing framework. Matias also recalled his discussions with Sheik, recalling they were filled with enthusiasm about trusting the artistic process and looking forward to a new evolution of the familiar material.
