Former Golden State Warriors No. 2 Pick Earns Roster Spot Ahead of Opening Night

After appearing in just five NBA games over the past two seasons, James Wiseman, the former second overall pick, has successfully landed a spot on the New York Knicks roster for the 2026-27 season. Wiseman, who started his NBA career with the Golden State Warriors, has faced significant injury challenges, including missing the entire 2021-22 season due to a knee injury sustained during his first season in the league. Additionally, he tore his left Achilles tendon during his debut with the Indiana Pacers in the opening game of the 2024-25 season.

The Knicks, current NBA champions, acquired several veterans prior to training camp, including Wiseman. Despite initial doubts about his chances of making the team, he earned a position as a third-string center behind Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond after the Knicks released Bruce Brown, Tony Bradley, Drew Eubanks, and John Konchar. In four preseason games, Wiseman showcased his potential, averaging 8.0 points and 4.3 rebounds, highlighted by a standout performance against the Toronto Raptors.

Knicks head coach Mike Brown discussed the decision to retain Wiseman, emphasizing the advantages of his youth, athleticism, and length compared to Bruce Brown Jr. Brown praised Wiseman’s vertical threat and overall capabilities, which could prove beneficial for the team’s dynamics, considering his age and physical attributes. Brown had previously served as associate head coach for the Warriors during Wiseman’s initial seasons.
