CBS News faces $20M defamation lawsuit after misidentifying Maryland teenager in Reflecting Pool report

A Maryland teenager is pursuing a $20 million defamation lawsuit against CBS News, alleging the network falsely associated him with arrests for vandalism at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The 15-year-old plaintiff, referred to as “JV,” asserts he was solely detained for riding an e-bike and not involved in any vandalism activities.

Filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the complaint highlights CBS’s use of video footage depicting JV in handcuffs while discussing the arrests. It emphasizes that CBS’s reporting created false implications about his involvement in the vandalism, an assertion that has caused JV significant emotional distress and public humiliation. Although CBS later issued an on-air correction, the lawsuit argues it cannot negate the original damage caused by their false portrayal.
