More Details on Arrested Saudi OpenAI Employee, Who is Seeking Release on Bail

Abdulrahman Alfozan, an employee of OpenAI from Saudi Arabia, has been arrested by the FBI on suspicion of inserting a recording device into a conference room. Previously an engineer at Meta and part of a Y Combinator start-up, Alfozan gained U.S. permanent residency in 2020 and joined OpenAI in July 2025.

Authorities reported that the device was hidden in a television’s USB port and obscured with toilet paper. Evidence includes photographs of Alfozan entering the room. The complaint also mentioned that a chatbot account associated with his spouse contained prompts related to the device’s installation. Additionally, security personnel discovered a bag left by Alfozan containing identification and another recording device. Discussions in that conference room involved sensitive proprietary information. If convicted, he could face five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Alfozan’s legal team has requested his release, suggesting he comply with conditions including wearing an ankle monitor and ceasing the use of covert recording devices.
