NYC installs red light cameras at 600 intersections, reaching state-law maximum

New York City has installed red light cameras at a total of 600 intersections, which is the maximum permitted under state legislation. City officials report that running red lights was involved in 22% of fatal intersection accidents from 2023 to 2025. Additionally, violations have significantly decreased by over 80% at locations equipped with these cameras.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani stated, “Red light cameras help us get home safely by holding dangerous drivers accountable and preventing crashes before they happen.” The Department of Transportation indicated that injuries resulting from rear-end collisions have dropped nearly 60%, while T-bone crash injuries have decreased by 70% due to the installation of these cameras. DOT Commissioner Mike Flynn remarked that these measures not only save lives but also modify driver conduct. The city aims to reduce the alarming uptick in red light violations observed since the pandemic began.
