A newly installed battery system at an apartment complex in Buffalo, New York, is designed to store energy when available and provide power during times of high demand or elevated electricity prices. The initiative, supported by the battery manufacturer Viridi and developer Good Carbon Co., represents one of the largest lithium-ion battery systems in a U.S. residential building.
The 3.75 megawatt-hour battery can supply energy to the Peace Bridge Place affordable housing complex for several days. Officials believe this project will demonstrate that large batteries can be safely integrated into residential areas. Viridi CEO Jon M. Williams noted that large-scale installations have been hindered by safety concerns, particularly regarding fire hazards.
This project has gained support from the New York State Energy Research and Development Agency, which is focused on inclusive clean energy solutions. As demand for electricity rises, experts suggest that such battery systems can enhance grid reliability while promoting a transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy.
