Poll: Nine months into Mamdani’s tenure, affordability remains serious problem

The financial hardship in New York City continues to intensify, with a recent survey by Honan Strategy Group indicating that almost half of the voters polled are likely to depart the five boroughs within the next five years due to escalating living costs. The survey, part of the 5 Borough Barometer, reveals that 31% of respondents feel they are very likely to leave the city. This survey sheds light on the severe financial challenges residents face, particularly with utilities, groceries, and healthcare being significant burdens.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration, which took office following a historic win over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, had promised to address affordability through initiatives such as universal childcare and affordable housing. However, nine months into his tenure, the poll indicates that 92% of respondents still view high living costs as a critical issue. Furthermore, most participants reported a worsening financial situation over the past year, with 56% cutting grocery spending and a third falling behind on bills. While 25% blamed landlords and developers for the crisis, opinions varied on accountability, as only 18% attributed the issue to the city government.
