President Donald Trump has reiterated his proposal to rename New Mexico as ‘New America,’ claiming that such a change could elevate home values and foster state pride. In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, “New Mexico should immediately change its name to New America. We are not Mexico, we are the United States of America!” He mentioned that the new name would bring “great value and prestige to the State!” and would lead to higher home values and incomes.
Additionally, Trump took a jab at the state’s elections, suggesting, “Maybe even the Crooked Elections, that New Mexico is known for, would become honest again!” No evidence was provided to support his claims about the name change’s economic impact or election integrity. This concept mirrors a similar idea he previously shared along with a map showing ‘Mexico’ marked out and replaced. New Mexico’s Democratic Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, criticized the suggestion, emphasizing that the state’s name is longstanding and not up for negotiation while her administration focuses on other significant issues.
